About Us

P.I.N.A. is a grassroots organization comprised of diverse individuals from Napa County, including educators, healthcare professionals, environmentalists, and home gardeners. What we all share is the belief that genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) pose a serious risk to our health and the health of future generations, and that they also threaten our environment, economy, and consumers' rights. We all eat food and are concerned that these irreversible changes to our food supply and environment are taking place without governmental oversight, without input from the general public, and without people's knowledge and consent.

Since studies show that the more people learn about GEOs the less they trust them, our main goals, in addition to advocacy, are education and dialogue. For example, P.I.N.A. met monthly with representatives from all of the major agricultural organizations in Napa County for one year, discussing monthly readings on various aspects of GE agriculture. On November 30, 2009, all four organizations agreed upon and signed a position statement regarding the use of GEOs in Napa County. This position includes the following components:

    1. GEOs pose risks.

    2. GEOs are not adequately regulated by the state or federal government.

    3. No GEOs should be introduced in Napa County until an adequate regulatory system is in place.
